Hard water contains large amounts of dissolved minerals. These minerals not only affect the taste and appearance of your ice, but the deposits left behind by hard water can foul up the water lines and working parts of your ice maker.
Soft Options
Most ice makers come with a preinstalled water filter that removes impurities, including some mineral deposits, from hard water. Over time, however, the minerals build up in the filter, making it ineffective. Replace the filter regularly, according to the manufacturer's instructions or about every six months, to keep foul-tasting hard water minerals out of the ice. If the ice maker does not have a filter, you can install one by cutting into the water line that supplies the ice maker. Alternately, you can install a whole-house water filter or softener that removes minerals from hard water.
